March 9th, 2024 was the night the 2023-24 hockey season ended for Sacred Heart. The Pioneer men’s team dropped a 5-1 Atlantic Quarterfinal Game 2 to Niagara, ending the Pioneers' season prematurely and disappointingly….at home.
Two weeks earlier, the Sacred Heart women saw their season come to an end similarly, in a NEWHA Quarterfinal Game 2…at home. Both games were sweeps with both having disappointing ends. There is, however, optimism in Pioneer nation heading into 2024-25. Key contributors return in the likes of John Jaworski, Hunter Sansbury, Paige McNeil, and Izzy Chaput among others. They are mixed in with newcomers (both from the portal and the 2024 recruiting class) who will have to mesh quickly and have an immediate impact. Both teams have lofty expectations, which is what you should expect to happen when you invest what the school has invested into the programs. The Pioneer women were picked third in NEWHA, looking for their second championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament. While the men were picked to win Atlantic Hockey for the first time. Again, looking for that elusive conference crown and NCAA Tournament bid. I have said this before, the expectations for both programs have continued to rise. Which is exactly what you want and what should happen…but now they have to rise up and meet them. My big questions heading into the new year….
It will be a long season. There will be ups, there will be downs. There will be frustration, there will be moments of celebration, but that’s hockey. The goals are lofty, time to rise to the occasion and meet them. Happy Hockey season. Let’s Go Pios! Player Name: Cole O’Donnell
